Abalone Webinar

In addition to serving as president of the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society, Ann Vileisis is a well-regarded writer on natural history, environmental, and food topics.  The Port Orford author’s latest book is “Abalone:  The remarkable history and uncertain future of California’s iconic shellfish.”  The Elakha Alliance, which works to prepare the way for reintroduction of sea otters to Oregon waters, hosts her for an online talk on Tuesday, May 25, 6:30 p.m.  The event is free and open to all.

Prized for their iridescent shells and delectable meat, abalone have a long and rich cultural history on the West Coast and also, historically, an ecological relationship with sea otters.  With increasing stresses to marine ecosystems today, these unique mollusks now face enormous survival challenges. Ann Vileisis will lead a deep dive into the environmental history of abalone, including updates on current endangered species recovery efforts.
