The Oregon Coast Community College invites the public to learn about their Aquarium Science Program on Nov. 8, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Oregon Coast Community College (400 SE College Way, Newport). Guests are invited to tour the facility, and hear a free lecture about ocean acidification and its potential impacts in Oregon's coastal waters.

Larry Boles, the Aquarium Science Program Manager, will present a lecture titled: "Oyster Shells & Coral Reefs: How Ocean Acidification Impacts Marine Life." Ocean acidification is part of global climate change that doesn’t always get the attention it warrants. In this course, participants will meet at Oregon Coast Community College’s Aquarium Science Building to learn about how seemingly small changes in the acid content of ocean waters can create large challenges for marine organisms. The course includes a tour of the Aquarium Science Facility where members of the tour will see how the staff control acidity in a coral reef aquarium. No knowledge of chemistry is required but participants will leave with a better understanding of the chemical challenges that ocean acidification presents for our global marine environment.
