Bandon Hotel Hearing
The vexed issue of the hotel proposed for iconic Coquille Point is coming to the fore again. Bandon’s Planning Commission will hold a hearing on a new version of the proposal on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in the city council chambers at Bandon City Hall (555 Hwy 101). Members of the public can testify, and indeed need to testify to put themselves on the record and potentially be part of any appeal. Oregon Shores has submitted comments strongly opposing the project.
Earlier this year, Oregon Shores played an active role in opposing the previous version of the hotel, which was much larger and required a change in the city’s zoning. The planning commission voted that one down. Now, the would-be developer—Mike Keiser, the owner of the Bandon Dunes golf complex—has come back with a scaled-down version, which is small enough to qualify for a conditional use permit within the city’s existing plan. The proposed hotel, on the site of the Bandon Beach Motel, due to close, will be harder to oppose since it doesn’t require an amendment to the city’s comprehensive plan. But it still poses threats to birds and other wildlife on the national wildlife refuge immediately adjacent.
The address of the property in question is 1090 Portland Ave., S.W. If testifying note that it is application #18-132.
