The 50th anniversary of Oregon’s pioneering Beach Bill is coming up next year.  The Friends of Haystack Rock are getting a jump on the celebration with their December speaker in their “Library Lecture Series.” Leading coastal conservationist and shoreline lover Neal Maine will present “The Oregon Beach Bill:  50 Years” on Wednesday, December 14.  Like all of the lectures in this series, held on the second Wednesday of each month from November through April, the event takes place at 7 p.m. in the Cannon Beach Public Library (131 N. Hemlock).

Neal Maine was a long-time Seaside High School biology teacher who founded that school’s estuarine studies program.  He served on Oregon Shores’ board during the ‘70s, and then founded the North Coast Land Conservancy, guiding it for many years.  He is also a co-founder of the Haystack Rock Awareness Program run by the city of Cannon Beach (for which the Friends of Haystack Rock is a non-profit support group).  Maine is also a skilled photographer, and will bring his experience as an advocate and naturalist, as well as an artist’s eye, to his topic.
