We’re in the midst of celebrating the 50th anniversary year of the Oregon Beach Bill, which gave us our public shoreline and made a program like CoastWatch possible.  The anniversary of the bill’s passage by the legislature is June 7.  In recognition of that key milestone, we’re sponsoring a celebratory beachwalk.

Fawn Custer, our CoastWatch volunteer coordinator, will lead a special beachwalk beginning at 4 p.m., lasting until approximately 6 p.m.  Meet her at the Nye Beach Turnaround in Newport (if you arrive late and look for the group on the beach, she promises to be wearing her orange rain pants, rain or shine).  The turnaround is at the western terminal of N.W. Beach Dr. in Newport.

Fawn will lead a guided beachwalk, introducing shoreline ecology and also discussing the history of CoastWatch and its role in protecting our public beaches, and explaining the work that CoastWatchers do to keep a watchful eye for natural changes or management concerns.  Low tide on this day is at 5:42 p.m. and is a minus-2 tide, so there should be some good beachcombing to be had along with the information Fawn will provide.

This will be a learning opportunity, but also a chance to make a statement in support of our public beaches.  Join Fawn both to learn about shoreline natural history and to take a stand.

For more information, contact Fawn Custer at (541) 270-0027, fawn@oregonshores.org.
