CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer is offering a beachwalk and King Tide Project training (along with general background on CoastWatch) on Monday, Oct. 23, from 8-10 a.m. She will lead a beachwalk and CoastWatch training session on the beach in Lincoln City.
The expedition takes place on the beach at the N.W. 15th St. access in Lincoln City. To get there, from Highway 101 turn west onto 15th street (at the Jasmine Thai Restaurant) and continue west towards the ocean. There is ample street parking as well as a public parking lot nearby. Parking is also available at the Sea Gull Beachfront Motel near the beach access. Participants should plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early and dress in layers for Oregon Coast weather.
Custer will discuss the natural history of the beach and tidepools, and provide background on materials found in the driftline that day. She will also describe how volunteer photographers can contribute to citizen science by helping to document the highest tides of the year through the King Tide Project. She will also provide a “CoastWatch Clinic,” a quick introduction to basic mile monitoring together with an explanation of some of our special citizen science projects. The walk will last about two hours, although Fawn will certainly be glad to linger as long as there are questions.
The event is free, and any beachgoer interested in coastal natural history is welcome to join the walk and learn. The particular focus, though, is on training CoastWatchers or prospective mile adopters, and introducing our citizen science projects, particularly the King Tide Project.
