CoastWatch will be participating in the Port Orford Street Fair on Saturday, Aug. 11, and bringing an array of opportunities for learning about the shoreline and citizen science. CoastWatch will join the Redfish Rangers and Shoreline Education for Awareness to host a booth at the fair, handing out stickers, holding a raffle, and, most important, providing information about the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and citizen science projects. The street fair runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
During the course of the day, Fawn Custer, CoastWatch’s volunteer coordinator, will lead three beachwalks, each with a different focus. The first, at 10 a.m., will emphasize the marine mammal stranding program; Wesley Koster, the area's new State Parks beach ranger, will accompany this walk, so it would also be an opportunity to meet him and ask any questions you have about his department's shoreline management. At 1 p.m. Fawn will take another group out for a guided tour of the driftline with special emphasis on the beached bird survey. And at 3 p.m., Fawn will lead yet another walk, this one devoted to the marine debris survey. All of these walks start at Battle Rock State Wayside. While the walks have particular purposes, in terms of learning about citizen science opportunities, they all provide an opportunity to learn about shoreline ecology and about CoastWatch monitoring.
See elsewhere on the calendar for other citizen science-related opportunities during the weekend, including a talk on marine mammals on Friday night and a BioBlitz at Redfish Rocks on Sunday.
Everyone is welcome to these free beachwalks. For more information, contact Fawn Custer at (541) 270-0027, fawn@oregonshores.org.
