Black Oystercatchers, with their vivid orange bills and unmistakable clacking cry, are a familiar and well-loved denizen of our rocky intertidal areas. They are also a species of conservation concern due to the bird’s small population size and vulnerability to a variety of impacts.  Volunteers can help with the conservation of this species by monitoring the birds to add to knowledge about their numbers and nesting success.

The Audubon Society of Portland organizes a Black Oystercatcher Project to do just that.  To learn more about this community science project, go to https://audubonportland.org/get-involved/community-science/black-oystercatcher/.

If you would like to consider getting involved, attend an online training this year on Thursday, April 29, 6:30-8 p.m.

To sign up for this training, or obtain more information, contact Allison Anholt, Portland Audubon’s Coastal Community Science Biologist, at aanhold@audubonportland.org.

Partners in this project include U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Friends of Cape Falcon, Haystack Rock Awareness Program, U.S. Geological Survey, Friends of Haystack Rock, Audubon Society of Lincoln City, Cape Arago Audubon Society, and Kalmiopsis Audubon Society.
