The South Coast Striders hiking group invites the public to join them on a hike at Cape Arago, south of Charleston in Coos County.  Meet at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, at the covered pavilion at Cape Arago Point.  The event is free and open to all.

There are two options.  The first leg of the hike is 2.5 miles, one way, from Cape Arago Point along the Arago Pack Trail to Simpson Reef (where the group will stop for wildlife viewing) and then along the Oregon Coast Trail to a point a quarter of a mile south of Shore Acres Botanical Garden.  Those wishing to end their hike here will need to arrange to leave a vehicle by the road and ferry to the starting place.

Those choosing a longer hike will cross the highway and, depending on conditions, take the Perimeter Trail and Arago Pack Trail back to Arago Point for a total of 7.5 miles of hiking.  The short hike is rated moderate and the long hike is rated moderate to difficult.

Plan on two hours for the short hike and three to fTrour hours for the long hike.  Restrooms are at beginning and end of the long hike and a short drive from end of short hike.  Pack a lunch to enjoy along the way, or at the end.
