The Newport group of the nationwide Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) will be sponsoring a climate advocacy training session from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at the Newport Public Library (35 Nye Street).  Brian Ettling will be the primary trainer with assistance provided by local CCL members.  Light snacks will be provided.

The goal of the session is to train people interested in making a constructive effort to combat climate change to effectively lobby elected officials, government agencies, and businesses.  In particular, the CCL seeks to engage advocates for their “carbon dividend” approach.

The primary trainer, Brian Ettling, was a seasonal park ranger at Crater Lake National Park, Oregon and Everglades National Park, Florida for over 25 years. While working in the national parks, he saw the negative impacts of climate change on these national treasures. This led him to give over 200 climate change talks over the past eight years as a park ranger, Toastmaster, Climate Reality Leader, and a volunteer for CCL.

The year of 2018 promises to be a busy climate advocacy time for preparing for the 2019 Oregon state legislative session.  State Senator Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek have established a Joint Committee on Carbon Reduction which will be meeting on May 22 in Salem for the first time.  Although the Clean Energy Jobs bill did not pass the 2018 legislative short session, this bill will likely be the foundation upon which future legislation is drafted.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address climate change.  In an effort to generate the political will necessary for passage of our Carbon Fee and Dividend proposal they train and support volunteers to build relationships with elected officials, the media and their local community.  More information on this can be found at https://citizensclimatelobby.org/.

The Newport group of Citizens’ Climate Lobby sponsors monthly meetings to help empower local residents to make constructive efforts for a transition to a cleaner energy economy with less of an impact to the environment.  Individuals can contact the Newport group at cclnewport@gmail.com or (541) 968-5143.
