COASST training session.

CoastWatch has long served as the Oregon partner for the COASST beached bird survey.  Based at the University of Washington, COASST (Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team) conducts the survey through the West Coast states.  It is a justly renowned citizen science project, one of the most consistently successful over a long period of time in the world.

Prospective citizen scientists, or simply those interested in learning about beached birds and COASST, are invited to “Cool COASSTal Stories,” a virtual gathering on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 7-8 p.m.  Join COASST Executive Director Dr. Julia Parrish for a walk down memory lane, as she describes the program’s early days and first beached bird surveys, and carries the story forward to the present marine debris survey and die-off alerts. This talk will be complete with photos from the archives and highlights from the beached birds and marine debris programs.

The program is free and open to all.  To register, go here.
