If you might be interested in the COASST (Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team) beached bird survey, either to participate or just to learn what it is all about, you’ll have a chance to observe one take place on Thursday, April 11, in Newport. CoastWatcher Karen Driscoll, an experienced beached bird volunteer, will conduct a regular monthly survey, and invite other CoastWatchers and the public to join her. She will be glad to explain the survey and demonstrate the techniques used in conducting it.
The survey site is north of Yaquina Head, on the beach at the end of 68th St, just north of the signal at Lighthouse Drive. Heading north pass 66th and 68th will be the next left turn. If you see Avery coming up on the right you have gone too far. Coming from the north, as soon as you pass Avery Street prepare to turn right onto 68th Street. It is a small dirt road, down to the parking lot at the beach.
CoastWatch is COASST’s Oregon partner. We help to recruit volunteers to participate in the survey as part of our set of citizen science projects, although to become a full-fledged volunteer it is necessary to take a full-day training from COASST.
The survey gathers science-quality data that can be used by researchers and resource agencies, and helps to track the health of seabird populations and the state of the ocean.
