Coastal Ecology Training
CoastWatch will join forces with the federal Bureau of Land Management’s Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (YHONA) for a joint training session for CoastWatchers and YHONA interns. The session takes place Wednesday, April 11. It will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the meeting room at YHONA headquarters (750 Lighthouse Dr.), then move to the shoreline. The event is free and open to all CoastWatchers or prospective CoastWatchers, but an RSVP is necessary.
Fawn Custer, our CoastWatch volunteer coordinator, will lead the training. She will provide an introduction to CoastWatch (for the benefit of the interns, or other newcomers to the program), and discuss coastal ecology, tides (including “king tides” and sea level rise), and citizen science opportunities. At about 1:30 p.m., the group will move down to the shore to study tidepools and the contents of the driftline. The tide will be falling, so beachcombing should be good.
If you would like to participate, contact Fawn at (541) 270-0027, fawn@oregonshores.org. There is a limit on how many people can be accommodated, so an RSVP is a necessity, and registered participants will receive a parking pass for Yaquina Head, otherwise a pay site.
