A CoastWatch orientation beachwalk will be held on Saturday, July 16, at Ziolkouski Beach Park in Winchester Bay, beginning at 9 a.m.  This will be a chance for new CoastWatchers to brush up on their observational skills, longer-term mile adopters to get a refresher course, and the CoastWatch-curious to learn about the program. The walk will take about 90 minutes.  All are welcome to this free event, but registration is required.

The guide for this event is naturalist, veteran ecotour leader, and CoastWatch friend Marty Giles.  She will share information about CoastWatch:  what to observe while walking a mile, what to bring along, how to fill out a CoastWatch report, and which citizen and community science projects are available to volunteers in the area.  She will discuss plenty of shoreline natural history along the way and will be happy to answer questions.

Ziolkouski Beach Park is found at the conjunction of the beach and the south jetty at the Umpqua River mouth, just west of Winchester Bay, which is just south of Reedsport in Douglas County.  This is CoastWatch Mile 146. The walk will cover much of this mile, so walking distance will be one to two miles. Bring comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. You will need to bring your own drinking water. Park here, at the South Umpqua Jetty parking area.

Contact CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Jesse Jones to register, if you have any questions, or if you need more detailed directions:  (503) 989-7244, jesse@oregonshores.org.
