CoastWatch Training Session

CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer invites everyone interested in coastal natural history, but especially anyone interested in participating in one of our Community Science Teams, to a special training session she has planned for Saturday, Dec. 8, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the “education yurt” at Beverly Beach State Park, just north of Newport (198 N.E. 123^rd Ave.).

Her emphasis is on training CoastWatchers willing to consider joining one of the Community Science Teams she is organizing for the Cascade Head and Otter Rock marine reserves. These teams will work with Fawn to coordinate the various citizen science projects that CoastWatch conducts in the areas adjacent to the marine reserves.  But the training she offers would be of value to any CoastWatcher, or anyone else fascinated by the shore, and all are invited to this free event.  Fawn promises a “hands-on type of training with specimens.”

Stay for the entire event if you can, especially if you are going to volunteer to join a Community Science Team, but you can also attend during particular slots.  From 11 a.m.-noon, Fawn will focus on CoastWatch monitoring, sea star population surveys, and the King Tide Project; from noon-1 p.m. on the beached bird and marine debris surveys; and from 1-2 p.m. on marine mammal stranding reports and the “beached marine critters” survey and online portal.
