KS Wild, our partners in opposing the Oregon Department of Development’s rush to develop the proposed Colebrook Quarry, are organizing a hike to Colebrook Rock, along Hunter Creek just south of Gold Beach in Curry County. It takes place on Friday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
KS Wild’s staff ecologist, Rich Nawa, will lead the hike, which is both an Earth Day celebration and a tour of a threatened place. Colebrook Rock is an easily accessible large rock outcrop with abundant wildflowers and nearby old growth forest. The 40-acre Bureau of Land Management parcel is threatened with total destruction from a proposed Oregon Department of Transportation quarry. This is a chance to enjoy panoramic views, identify wildflowers and visit 300-year-old trees, all of which could be lost. After lunch on the rock the group will drive to Hunter Creek Bog, one mile away, for a short hike.
