The Oregon Coordinating Council on Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia (OAH) is seeking public comment on their proposed Oregon’s DRAFT Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia Action Plan. This OAH Action Plan was developed in recognition of the acidification and hypoxia impacts that we see today, in the hopes of minimizing the impacts for tomorrow, and altering the trajectory of ocean changes for future generations.  The original deadline for public comments on the draft has now passed, but the OAH Council decided to add one more opportunity—this remote public comment session, beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17.  The meeting is remote only.

Oregon Shores strongly endorses the plan’s basic framework, but commented about the lack of action in the “Action Plan,” which tends to call for more study.  For instance, the plan discusses water quality concerns, but does not call for reigning in the Department of Forestry, whose inadequate regulation of forest practices leads to the sedimentation and chemical spray residues that cause Oregon to fall short of its water quality goals.  The plan calls for Oregon to do its share to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which drive ocean acidification, but doesn’t demand that the state block the proposed Jordan Cove LNG export facility, which would become by far the state’s largest source of these emissions.  See Oregon Shores' comments here.
