Coquille Point Hearing
The Bandon Planning Commission will take up deliberations on the controversial proposed hotel at Coquille Point at their Thursday, June 28 meeting, 7 p.m. in the city council chambers at Bandon City Hall (555 Hwy 101). This is a change from the previous schedule, which would have had the proposal on the agenda for the commissions May 24 meeting.
The delay comes at the request of the applicant. After the April 26 public hearing on the zone text amendment request for the Bandon Beach Hotel project, which needs a change in the city’s comprehensive plan to be allowed to build a large hotel immediately adjacent to the national wildlife refuge at Coquille Point, the record was left open for an additional seven days for the public to submit additional comment. The applicant then had at least seven days to respond with a written rebuttal. Since the project's attorney, Robert Miller, will be out of the country for the next few weeks, the applicant team has requested to be heard at the June meeting to provide them with additional time to prepare. This also allows planning commissioners additional time to read through the public testimony received within that extended comment period.
The issue at present is whether the city’s plan should be amended for this one lot, to allow for greater height and fewer setbacks than would be allowed in this zone. Oregon Shores submitted comments which oppose on principle the altering of the adopted plan for such a narrow special interest. Specific objections to the hotel plan would be raised during a separate application process, which would take place if the city does change the zone to make the four-story hotel the developer has in mind a possibility.
