Dead Bird Lecture
The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) is offering a lecture entitled: The Secret Life of Dead Birds. The speaker is Raymond Glenn Ford, a research specialist with the University of California at Santa Cruz's Institute of Marine Sciences. The event takes place Wednesday, July 25, at 4 p.m. in OIMB's Boathouse Auditorium. Since all CoastWatchers are asked to note observations of birds washed up on their miles, and many participate in the formal beached bird survey, the subject matter is highly relevant to our work.
Ford specializes in behavioral ecology and population dynamics of vertebrates, including: computer modeling of space‑use patterns; demographic modeling of population response to environmental change, and recovery rates; statistical analysis of transect data for determination of population size and distribution; oil spill trajectory modeling, and analysis of risk to biological resources and habitat; development of computer graphics and information‑access systems for planning and management of marine resources; estimation of seabird mortality from oil spills; and collection and analysis of beached bird survey data. The last particularly relates to the topic of the lecture.
The lecture is part of the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology's (OIMB) 2018 Summer Series. These talks are free and open to the public, although they are generally aimed at scientists and science students, rather than at general audiences.
To find the OIMB Boathouse Auditorium, part near the campus, 63466 Boat Basin Road in Charleston, then walk down the road past the Coast Guard housing.
