CoastWatchers (and anyone interested in CoastWatch) on the southern coast will have a chance at a wide-ranging CoastWatch training session on Monday, Oct. 1, beginning at 10 a.m.  CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer will meet all comers in the parking lot of the Oregon State University Extension Building at the Curry County Fairgrounds (29392 Ellensburg Ave., which is also Hwy 101).

The beachwalk, on CoastWatch Mile 28, will cover the basics of mile monitoring.  Fawn will also delve into the various citizen science projects CoastWatch organizes, including those that survey stranded marine mammals and beached birds, and explain the procedures involved.  (One goal is to revive a marine debris monitoring site at that location that has gone dormant.  A marine debris survey will be conducted as part of the walk.)  This will also be a chance to prepare for the upcoming King Tide Project.  In addition, there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and learn about the ecology of the driftline and the beach.

In case of inclement weather the group will meet instead at the Curry Public Library (94341 3rd St. in Gold Beach) to cover the same information and examine various specimens Fawn will bring of animals and plants that may be found on the beach.

For more information, contact Fawn Custer at (541) 270-0027.
