Guided Bird Walk
The Yaquina Birders & Naturalists offer a birding walk led by a deeply versed expert on Saturday, March 18. Roy Lowe, retired from his post as long-time manager of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex, will lead a walk beginning at the Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center parking lot (620 N.W. Spring St., near the southwest corner of the Alsea Bay Bridge) in Waldport. The walk is slated to run from 9-11 a.m.
The walk will begin by focusing on the birds of Alsea Bay. The bay provides a wintering area for grebes, loons, great blue herons and a variety of ducks including mergansers, bufflehead and surf scoters; early arriving pigeon guillemots and osprey may also be on view. The group will then travel east to the 50-acre Eckman Lake. This freshwater lake harbors hundreds of ducks in late winter including Mallard, Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal and Ring-necked Duck.
The event is free and open to everyone. Dress for variable weather. For more info, call 541-961-1307.
