Hike to Blacklock Point

The Southcoast Striders hiking group is offering a free expedition to Blacklock Point in Curry County.  As it happens, the is one of the sites that Oregon Shores is working to protect with a special Marine Conservation site designation through the state’s Rocky Habitat Management Strategy.

The hike begins at 9:30 at Boice-Cope County Park.  If there is sufficient demand and a second leader is identified, a second group can start 20 minutes later. 

The full hike is an 8.2-mile journey past Floras Lake, through densely woods and past rocky viewpoints, to culminate at Blacklock Point, one of the coast’s most beautiful sites.  Since it is an out-and-back hike, participants can turn around at any point should the distance prove too challenging. 

A shorter, four-mile hike is also offered along the beach.  Leader Don Luce will describe the natural history of organisms that have adapted to life near the ocean.

There is a $5 parking fee at Boice-Cope Park.  Participants should bring food and water and be prepared to dress in layers—a windbreaker with hood is recommended. 

To reach Boice-Cope County Park, turn west on Floras Lake Loop Road, which crosses Hwy 101 about a half-mile south of Langlois.  Follow the signs to the park for three miles.
