Intro to Freshwater Mussels & BioBlitz
Freshwater mussels are experiencing a dramatic decline; 72% percent of North American freshwater mussels are considered extinct or imperiled. Emilie Blevins, Endangered Species Conservation Biologist and Freshwater Mussel Lead for the Xerces Society, will provide an introduction to western freshwater mussel biology and life history, current status and conservation needs. Her presentation takes place Saturday, July 28, 10 a.m, at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center ( 2400 US-101, about three miles south of Yachats).
An aquatic corridor BioBlitz will follow the presentation. Participants will conduct surveys of nearby creeks in an effort to catalog freshwater mussels.
The event is free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport, federal recreation pass, or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and at some trailheads and day use sites. For more in-formation on these events, contact the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center at 541-547-3289.
