Non-native or invasive species are widespread throughout the landscape; some have detrimental effects to diverse habitats. The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center is hosting a presentation that considers this problem, when invasive species expert Jim Nechols speaks on “Invasive plants: Threats, Challenges and Solutions.”  The talk, free and open to all, takes place on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 3 p.m.  The Visitor Center is located at 2400 Hwy 101, about three miles south of Yachats).  Note that while the presentation is free, a pass is required for parking at the center.

Dr. Nechols is an insect biologist and retired professor from Kansas State University who specializes in the ecology and biological control of insect pests and weeds. Biological control is the control of a pest species by the introduction of a natural enemy or predator. Nechols will discuss what causes non-native species to be a nuisance and what we can do to manage these invasive species. He will also focus on biological control of knotweed species, a common riparian invader along the coast that is very difficult to control without chemical application.
