On the first day of this winter’s first series of king tides, the King Tide Project is offering a guided field trip, giving volunteer photographers an orientation to the citizen science project and a tour of promising locations for documenting the reach of the year’s highest tides.  Meet on Saturday, Nov. 4, 11 a.m., in the Boathouse Auditorium at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (63466 Boat Basin Rd. in Charleston—park near the main campus and then walk down the road past the Coast Guard housing to get to the auditorium).

For this event, the main King Tide Project partners—the Oregon Coastal Management Program, CoastWatch, and Surfrider—are partnering with the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.  Eric Dean of South Slough’s education department will join with Meg Reed, the Coastal Shores Specialist with the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, to lead the field trip.

The event provides a chance to try out your photography skills while observing the king tides around Charleston. The tour will visit three sites around Charleston to observe and photograph the high water and learn why it’s important to track king tides through photos every year. No photography experience required. Any camera, including a smartphone, will work for this field trip! After orientation at the OIMB Boathouse, transportation around Charleston will be provided. This event is rain or shine so dress appropriately and wear walking shoes.
