King Tide Wrap-Up Party

We’re celebrating the conclusion of the 2017-2018 King Tide Project on the north coast with a party at the Public Coast Brewery (264 3rd St.) in Cannon Beach.  The event is free and open to all.  We’ll furnish the finger food—drinks and meals available no host from the establishment.  Begin gathering at 5 p.m.  After some opening remarks about the project beginning at 5:30 p.m., the speaker will take the floor at about 5:50.  After the talk there will be a raffle.

We’ll be mingling, viewing the photos taken as part of this year’s project, and educating ourselves about sea level rise and erosion with a short, entertaining talk.  Everyone is welcome to attend, whether or not they participated in the project—this is a chance to learn about king tides and sea level rise, and perhaps plan on getting involved next fall.

Our speaker will be Dylan Anderson, who will present a talk on “Changing Coast, Changing Climate—Examples from our Oregon Beaches.” He is a fifth-year PhD candidate at Oregon State University, working toward a degree in Coastal and Ocean Engineering.  The focus of his research is on how the coast will respond to higher water levels created by global warming and sea level rise.  Sea level is driven by a range of factors, from daily high tides and storm surges to the shape of the nearshore ocean bottom and factors occurring thousands of miles away.  Anderson’s research attempts to tease apart these processes and determine how the sea level is linked to climate change, and thus to predict how future climate change will affect extreme tidal events.  He will provide at examples of how high waters have affected historic erosion in north-central Oregon and the climate that caused these events, and discuss what the future may have in-store for these communities.
