Lecture on Antarctica and Climate Change

James McClintock, a professor from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will give the summer public lecture as part of the Summer Seminar Series at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OMB).  Dr. McClintock speaks at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, in the OIMB Boathouse Auditorium.  His topic:  “From Penguins to Plankton—The Dramatic Impacts of Climate Change on the Antarctic Peninsula.”

McClintock is the Endowed University Professor of Polar and Marine Biology at UAB.  His research has been funded continuously over the past 25 years by the National Science Foundation and focuses on aspects of marine invertebrate nutrition, reproduction, and primarily, Antarctic marine chemical ecology. His research has grown to include studies of the impacts of rapid climate change and ocean acidification on Antarctic marine algae and invertebrates.

He is the author of the popular book “Lost Antarctica:  Adventures in a Disappearing Land.”  He is also a Banana Slug, which is to say that he is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz, and also did postdoctoral research there.

To reach the OIMB Boathouse Auditorium, park on Boat Basin Rd. near the campus and walk down the road past the Coast Guard housing.
