Lecture on Oregon Coast Trail

Connie Soper is an Oregon Coast Trail advocate and author of "Exploring the Oregon Coast Trail: 40 Consecutive Hikes from the Columbia River to the California Border." Her presentation on Saturday, Feb. 2, 1 p.m. at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center (about three miles south of Yachas) will provide a brief history of the trail and highlight some of the special places passed along the way, along with tips about how to hike it. She will also discuss recent efforts to improve and complete the trail.

Soper became interested in the Oregon Coast Trail when, as she tells it, "a friend had an Oregon State Parks brochure and said, 'Oh, we should do this.' One thing led to another. Whey said let’s just try it for a year and see how it turns out." They invited friends and family to join. They stayed in various places—the first year in Manzanita and Neskowin—and from there they did day trips. So that’s how she structured the book.

The event is free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport, federal recreation pass, or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and at some trailheads and day use sites.
