Take a dip beneath the surface and explore the underwater world of Oregon’s five marine reserves. In 2012, Oregon completed the designation of five marine reserve sites. These areas were set aside for conservation and scientific research. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Marine Reserves Program is tasked with oversight and scientific monitoring of these areas. Never before has there been an attempt to set-up such an extensive and comprehensive long-term monitoring program of the nearshore marine ecosystem. This presentation will highlight this work, and feature underwater photos and videos, with a focus on Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve.

The presenter will be Kelsey Adkisson. She is the Oregon Marine Reserves' Communications and Engagement Project Leader. She has a background in policy, research, journalism and graphic design. Prior to joining the Marine Reserves team, she did a Policy Fellowship with ODFW and the Governors Office, and has worked extensively in fisheries management. Kelsey holds a MS in Biology and has been a freelance graphic designer and photographer.

The event is free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport, federal recreation pass, or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and at some trailheads and day use sites. For more information on these events, contact the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center at 541-547-3289.

Cape Perpetua is situated between Yachats and Florence. The rocky shores of Cape Perpetua host some of the most biologically diverse rocky intertidal habitats found anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. Also, this reserve boasts some unique oceanographic characteristics. Upwelling, followed by periods of relaxation, create highly productive waters around the Cape Perpetua area.

Celebrate fall on the Oregon Coast with free educational presentations and events at Cape Perpetua. Visitors can enjoy a variety of speakers and topics every Saturday from January 19 – March 23, 2019 at the Cape Perpetua Speaker Series.
