Lights Out for Migratory Birds

As millions of birds fly over Oregon, the Portland Audubon Society reminds Oregonians to reduce light pollution during peak bird migration. Lights Out runs from Saturday, Sept. 17 to Wednesday, Oct. 11. Light pollution drowns out the stars that migrating birds use to navigate, and lures them into cities where they are at risk of colliding with windows. Across the U.S., nearly a billion birds die every year as a result of hitting a window. The Lights Out initiative invites building owners, businesses, and residents to take simple actions that protect migratory birds.

Oregon residents can help reduce light pollution during this time of high migration by turning off any unnecessary outdoor lighting from 11 p.m. until dawn. Additionally, you can turn off interior lights or close blinds and drapes to reduce light spill. Taller buildings and parking lots can lure birds off course into urban areas. Encouraging facilities managers to take similar steps to reduce nighttime lighting in large buildings will help bring awareness to this hazard.
