The Columbia River flows 1,243 miles from its headwaters in British Columbia to the sea. We in Oregon Shores are primarily concerned with the last few of those miles, the Columbia River estuary. But the estuary depends on everything that happens upstream, all the way to Canada. Those concerned about the health of the Columbia, then, might be interested in the current negotiations over the Columbia River Treaty that governs shared management practices between the U.S. and Canada.
A virtual listening session to engage the public in the process of modernizing the treaty will be held on Wednesday, May 31, at 5 p.m. It is sponsored by the Department of State, joined by the Bonneville Power Administration, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Northwestern Division, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
