Marbled Murrelet Survey Training

The 15^th annual marbled murrelet community survey is taking place this year, virus or no virus, but due to pandemic restrictions the volunteer training will be virtual this time around.  The only training for 2020 takes place on Thursday, July 16, 7 p.m.  Registration for the online event is required. Oregon State University ornithologist and Marbled Murrelet expert Kim Nelson and Paul Engelmeyer of Portland Audubon, manager of Ten Mile Creek Sanctuary, will lead this event.  The presentation will cover general murrelet ecology, importance of the Cape Perpetua Important Bird Area and marine reserve, updates on the Oregon Marbled Murrelet Project and the latest on murrelet conservation efforts in Oregon. Information will also be provided on how murrelet surveys are conducted.  Aside from the volunteer opportunity, this is a chance to learn more about Marbled Murrelets and the ‘Globally Significant’ Central Coast Murrelet Important Bird Area, with 100,000 acres of murrelet habitat in the Siuslaw National Forest and adjacent near-shore waters.
