Marine Debris Survey Training

CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Jesse Jones will lead a training session for our marine debris survey on Friday, Nov. 8, 1-2 p.m. at Moolack Beach, just north of Newport.  Meet in the pullout off Hwy 101, a little south of Milepost 135.  Everyone is welcome; there is no cost.

The marine debris survey, more formally known as the NOAA Marine Debris Accumulation Survey (NOAA being the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), takes place monthly at selected sites.  Volunteers gather information about marine debris that goes into a national NOAA database.  CoastWatch seeks to organize teams of volunteers for each site, so that no one person has to be there every month but someone is always available.  A group from the Oregon Coast Aquarium will be conducting the survey at this site, but additional volunteers are welcome and needed.  Feel free to attend if you are interested in participating at another site, or if you are simply curious about marine debris monitoring and would like to learn more about it.

Non-CoastWatchers can participate in the survey, and CoastWatchers don’t necessarily participate on their own miles.
