Meeting on Climate Action Plan

Groups concerned about climate change have called a meeting for Wednesday, December 11, to work on developing a climate action plan for Lincoln County.  The meeting takes place 5:30-7 p.m. at the Lincoln City Community Center (2150 N.E. Oak Pl.).

Organizers are the Audubon Society of Lincoln City, 350 Oregon Central Coast, and Citizens’ Climate Lobby. This is an opportunity for Lincoln City residents to identify what they believe are the key climate change issues affecting their city. The overall goal is to develop a climate action plan for Lincoln County that is based on the grassroots efforts of county residents.

The event will feature a presentation on the results of the county-wide climate change questionnaire that was coordinated by 350 Oregon Central Coast. This group will describe what they have accomplished to date, and what is happening in other Lincoln County cities such as Waldport, Yachats, and Newport.  The survey also included an incentive in the form of a drawing for individuals who filled out the survey form. Two drawings will be held at the meeting. The first $25 drawing will be for Lincoln City residents and the second $25 drawing will be for a Lincoln County resident who does not live in either Newport or Lincoln City who filled out the form.

The sponsoring groups contacted the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) about the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are likely generated in Lincoln County. To the credit of the state agency, the DEQ responded to the request by running an Environmental Protection Agency mobile emissions modeling program specifically for Lincoln County. The results concerning major sources of greenhouse emissions in the county will be presented at the meeting.
