Meeting on Shoreline Armoring
The Department of Land Conservation (DLCD) has convened a focus group to review the state’s administration of its policies concerning shoreline armoring (aka beachfront protection structures), typically riprap. This group is formally known as the Goal 18: Pre-1977 Development Focus Group. This refers to the fact that under the state’s land use regulations, properties developed prior to 1977 are potentially eligible for riprap, whereas those developed after this date are theoretically precluded from being riprapped or otherwise armored.
The next meeting of the focus group takes place on Wednesday, July 24, 104 p.m., in the Moss Room at the Agate Beach Best Western Hotel (3019 North Coast Hwy) in Newport.
This meeting will focus on oceanfront development regulations to reduce the need for shoreline armoring. Meeting materials will be available on the DLCD website. The meeting is open to the public for observation and there will be a dedicated time for public comment scheduled at the end of the agenda (three minutes per person). Members of the public may also submit written comments electronically to dlcd.goal18@state.or.us at any time. All submitted comments will be made available to focus group members.
All additional and previous meeting dates and materials for the group are available on the website. The final meeting of the group is scheduled for August 27 at 1pm in Newport, specific location TBA.
