Migratory Bird Day BioBlitz
Saturday, May 12 is World Migratory Bird Day, and it is being observed at Cape Perpetua with a special, bird-oriented BioBlitz to inventory migrants passing through the area on that day. (A BioBlitz involves a concerted, one-day effort to identify all species, or all of a certain type of species such as birds, mosses, etc., in a given area, to get a snapshot of the biodiversity found there.) This event is sponsored by a number of organizations that exercise stewardship over the area, adjacent to the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve, including the Oregon Marine Reserves Partnership (of which Oregon Shores is a founding partner), Portland Audubon, Oregon State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service.
Meet at 10 a.m. at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center (about three miles south of Yachats on Highway 101). Volunteers will spend an hour observing birds there, then branch out to one of three locations to continue observations until 1 p.m. This program is free. Bring your raincoat, spotting scope/binoculars, water and snacks.
The information gathered on this day will help scientists track the movements and variety of migratory birds along the Oregon coastline.
