Newport March for Science
Newport's edition of the People’s March for Science is planned for Saturday, April 22, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in South Beach. After participants begin gathering at 10:30, the one-mile march will begin at 11 a.m. The route will begin north of the roundabout on Marine Science Drive, in South Beach. Marchers will walk south along Marine Science Drive, turn left on 25th Street, march around the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and end with a rally on the northern lawn of the public wing. Participants are encouraged to carpool, and parking is provided at the South Beach Marina boat launch parking lot. Public restrooms can be found at the boat launch parking lot, and portable toilets will be provided on the Hatfield Marine Science Center grounds.
The rally will begin at noon, featuring Dr. Rick Spinrad. Dr. Spinrad is a celebrated scientist with over 30 years in the field, and has served as the head of NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research and the head of the National Ocean Service.
The March for Science is an international event. The Newport version is sponsored by the MidCoast Watersheds Council, the port and city of Newport, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and local businesses.
There will be a march in Washington, D.C., and in other cities around the nation and the world, as scientists and their supporters demonstrate on behalf of legitimate science (and the funding needed to maintain it) against those who pretend that scientific findings are partisan issues. This is a non-political, inclusive march and rally to support science, corresponding to similar marches around the country and the world on the same day. The theme is “Science for people, People for science.” The goal is to encourage a community conversation about how science affects our lives and helps us understand the world, and to support science funding, education, research, and application. Everyone is invited to this free event.
