The Oregon Coordinating Council on Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia invites the public to a symposium exploring the potential impacts of these ocean phenomena driven by climate change. All those concerned about the future of our ocean waters are encouraged to attend.

The symposium takes place on Friday, April 14, 8:30-11:45 a.m., auditorium at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (2030 S.E. Marine Science Dr.) in Newport.

Ocean acidification (OA) refers to the change in ocean chemistry caused by increasing concentrations of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. OA often co-occurs with hypoxia, which are conditions of low dissolved oxygen in marine systems.

In June 2021, the Oregon legislature passed House Bill (HB) 3114, representing a historic investment in Oregon's efforts to combat ocean acidification and hypoxia. With some direct appropriations to existing work groups at Oregon State University and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the bulk of the $1.9 million, one-time investment, was distributed through competitive grants led by the Oregon Ocean Science Trust (OOST). App projects funded by the legislation were identified in the 2019-2025 Oregon OAH Action Plan.

The event is free, but you need to register. To register and find links to more information about OAH, go here.
