The Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition officially came into existence on July 29, 1971. We’ve had quite a five-decade history, defending the coast and working for stronger protection of its resources and public beaches. We’re celebrating those 50 years and looking forward to the next 50 throughout 2021, but especially on the actual date of the 50th anniversary. We hope you will plan to spend some of this special day with us.
Please mark your calendars and save the date. Activities will include morning beachwalks on the south coast led by Fawn Custer, our citizen science trainer, and on the north coast by marine ecologist Stewart Schultz, author of The Northwest Coast: A Natural History. See separate listings for more information.
We’ll feature two talks by nationally renowned speakers: Orrin Pilkey, an world-renowned expert on beach erosion and shoreline armoring and critic of the way we manage our beaches, at 4 p.m.; and Mary Ellen Hannibal, author of Citizen Scientist: Searching for Heroes and Hope in an Age of Extinction, at 7 p.m.
The day will also include a brief look back at Oregon Shores’ history, short interviews with a number of coastal conservation pioneers, some special announcements, and more.
