Pistol River Birding Trip
The Kalmiopsis Audubon Society invites the public along for a Let's Go Birding adventure at the Pistol River on Oct. 6, beginning at 8 a.m. The trip leader will be Gary Maschmeyer. The group will look first for migrating ducks, geese, and shorebirds in the estuary and then search for sparrows and raptors, such as Red-tailed Hawks, White-tailed Kites, and Northern Harrier, in the pastures across the highway. Last year a group on a similar expedition found a rare Gray Catbird at this site.
Directions: To carpool from Brookings, meet Gary at the Azalea Middle School parking lot at 505 Pacific Ave in Brookings at 8 a.m. For a no-host carpool from the Gold Beach, meet at the Visitor Center at 8:15 a.m. Remember if no one else shows up, you need to drive down to meet up with Gary at the parking area just south of Pistol River bridge on the west side of Hwy 101 at 8:30 a.m.
If you have questions, contact Gary at 541-254-1641.
