For its December community meeting, the MidCoast Watersheds Council offers a talk on “blue carbon.” The event, free and open to the public takes place on Thursday, Dec. 7, 6:30 p.m., at the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center (333 S.E. Bay Blvd.) in Newport.

The speaker is Elizabeth Ruther, an officer with Pew Charitable Trusts and an expert on planning policy and blue carbon, which refers to the ability of coastal and marine plants to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and thus help to mitigate global warming.
