A talk on Oregon’s most abundant seabird is offered by the Yaquina Birders and Naturalists on Thursday, March 21, 7 p.m., and the Lincoln County headquarters of the Oregon State University Extension Program (1211 S.E. Bay Blvd.).  The event is free and open to all.

The speaker will be seabird biologist Stephanie Loredo, who will discuss the movements, dive behavior, and habitat use of Common Murres in the California Current off our shores.  Loredo will provide a look at the behavior and distribution of non-breeding Common Murres captured at the Yaquina Head colony in Newport and in the Columbia River plume over multiple years which included the progression of a marine heat wave. Satellite transmitters allowed for the development of behavior-specific habitat models for three different movement groups.

Loredo recently graduated from OSU with an M.S. in Wildlife Science. She has worked on marine wildlife research and conservation on the coast since 2014 for Oregon State University, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
