Presentation on (King) Tides

This year’s King Tides Project, through which volunteer photographers trace the reach of the highest tides of the year, is getting underway.  The first of three high-tide sequences this winter which will be the focus of the project arrives Nov. 15-17.  For more information, see our website article.

To celebrate all things tidal, and build enthusiasm for making this year’s King Tides Project the best yet, CoastWatch is seeking inspiration for this year’s King Tides season by sponsoring an online presentation by author Jonathan White on Thursday, Nov. 12, beginning at 6 p.m.  White is a sailor, surfer, and writer, whose book “Tides:  The Science and Spirit of the Ocean” is a comprehensive survey of what science knows about the surprising complex natural history of tides, and an adventurous travelogue that takes the author on journeys to many locations where unusual tides manifest themselves.  His talk will provide a backdrop for what we are learning about how sea level rise due to climate change is affecting tides worldwide.
