Join the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society on their next birdwatching outing, planned for Saturday, May 5, and see some of the amazing variety of birds in the Rogue River area. The trip leader will be Gary Maschmeyer, and he will lead the group on the “Jim Hunt” section of the riverside trail along the Rogue, looking and listening for song birds, including Black-throated Gray Warblers, Wilson’s Warblers, Warbling Vireos, and McGillivray Warblers, and more. The trip will leave from the Gold Beach Visitor Center (94080 Shirley Ln.) at 8 a.m.
No birding experience is required, and experts are welcome to come share their knowledge. While participants do a lot of walking, when they spot birds, they do a lot of looking, which can require standing in the same spot for long periods of time. Binoculars are recommended; a few binoculars will be available that first-timers may borrow.
These trips are weather-dependent. Rain will postpone any of the bird outings. Any field trip that is rained out will be rescheduled 3 or 4 days later, and those on the emailing list will be notified. Others can call Gary for the rescheduled date. If there is any question as to whether a bird outing is going to be postponed, you may call Gary in the morning before the scheduled outing.
To find out more, contact Gary at 541-412-0806. To sign up for their Let's Go Birding email reminder list, send a note to gmasch@charter.net (Getting on the list helps ensure you get word of added trips that may not be listed on the schedule, and any last-minute, weather related changes.)
Those from Brookings can meet at Azalea School (505 Pacific Ave, west of Oak St.) at 7:15 a.m. to car pool.
