As part of the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology’s spring seminar series, Dr. Kelly Sutherland will speak on “All Together Now? The coordination of multiple swimming jets by salps and siphonophores.” Pretty sciency, but CoastWatchers and other beachcombers often find salps washed up and wonder what they are—here’s a chance to learn about their biology at the biologist level.
The talk, free and open to the public, takes place at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 2, in the Boathouse Auditorium at OIMB. Park along Boat Basin Road by OIMB and walk down the extension of the road past the Coast Guard housing.
Kelly Sutherland is an assistant professor of biology at the University of Oregon. She specializes in studying the place where biology meets physics, to “gain a mechanistic understanding of how marine organisms interact with one another and within their fluid environment.”
