The Hatfield Marine Science Center continues with its Science on Tap series online.  The bad news is that you have to pour your own; the good news is that you can enjoy the talks without being in Newport.

On Wednesday, Dec. 15, 6 p.m., Selina Heppell will speak on “Can We Save Sea Turtles from Climate Change?”

Dr. Heppell is a professor at Oregon State University and department head of the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation.  She specializes in marine ecology as it bears on fish and sea turtles, and is a proponent of science communication who frequently speaks to public audiences.

Sea turtles have been around for millions of years and weathered many changes in our global climate. But today’s rate of change, on top of many other stressors, may be more than our current seven species can handle. Sea level rise and increased temperatures are degrading nesting habitats and skewing sea turtle sex ratios, leading to calls for population relocation efforts. But manipulating populations can be pointless or even perilous – how do we know when, where and how to interfere?  These are the questions Selina Heppell will address.
