Seabird Lecture in Newport
These days we have curators for everything from art to wine to cheese, so it should come as no surprise that the Oregon Coast Aquarium has a Curator of Birds. The person holding that position for the past 10 years, CJ McCarty, will speak during the next meeting of the Yaquina
Birders & Naturalists, Thursday, November 17, 7 p.m., in the Public Meeting Room of Central Lincoln PUD (2129 North Coast Highway). The event is free and open to the public.
McCarty will discuss the “Bird Ambassador” and Wild Bird Rehabilitation programs at the Aquarium. In the past 4 years, with the help of some charismatic murres and pelicans, the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s Bird Department has been working on new ways to educate the public about seabirds. And while taking care of the Aquarium’s bird collection is already a full-time job, the staff also enjoy working with the public and wild birds in need of a helping hand.
CJ McCarty has been working with captive animals for the past 25 years. Her passion for wildlife has taken her from learning to train walrus and beluga whales in Tacoma, Washington, to breeding Houbara Bustards in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and back in the United States to Newport.
