Portland Audubon, along with local partners, conducts a seabird nest colony monitoring project at several locations on the coast, including Cape Perpetua, Heceta Head, and the Cape Falcon Marine Reserve, along with nearby Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. This citizen science project helps to track the health of seabird populations, and determine how they are responding to the increased protection offered by marine reserves, such as those at Cape Perpetua and Cape Falcon.
A training for volunteers interested in participating in this project takes place on Saturday, June 1, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center (2400 Hwy 101), about three miles south of Yachats. The training is free. The survey takes place early June through late August. The volunteer commitment is flexible, but should typically involve monitoring a nesting area twice per month for 2-4 hours at a stretch.
