Seminar on Marine Photography

The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) is now holding its Research Seminar Series in hybrid form, both online and in person in the auditorium of the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building on the HMSC campus (2030 S.E. Marine Science Dr. in the South Beach area of Newport).  Next speaker is Israeli artist Amos Gazit, speaking on “Possibility of a Sea—How Underwater Dreams Come True” on Thursday, June 23, 3:30 p.m.  The event is free and open to all.

Amos Gazit have been active in the conservation, development, and rehabilitation of tropical marine environment (mainly in countries and islands in Southeast Asia and the South Caribbean).  He photographs and documents, from his personal point-of-view, the process of ecological changes and its effect on the environment, economy, and society.

Gazit writes: “The sights and shapes of the marine environment have always been a source of admiration, inspiration, and interest for humanity. As well as being a source for livelihood, economic and social development, and later as a subject for studies, scientific and applied research. The concept offers a holistic approach based on the use of photographs of the marine environment, and integrating it in academic studies, research and applications related to environmental science, economic development, liberal arts, and education, akin to what OSU is doing with its Marine Studies Initiative.”

For those attending in person, there will be a cookie and coffee social at 3 p.m. in the auditorium’s atrium. Bring your own mug.
