Seminar on Sustainable Fisheries

The Hatfield Marine Science Center Research Seminar Series continues online.  This week’s talk on “Policy and Science for Sustainable Fisheries in Oregon” takes place on Thursday, May 27, at 3:30 p.m.

The panel of speakers consists of Dr. Caren Braby, Marine Resources Program Manager, Marine Resources Program, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife; Maggie Sommer, Fishery Management Section Leader, Marine Resources Program, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife; and Dr. Leif Rasmuson, Marine Fisheries Research Project Leader, Marine Resources Program, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Their description of the topic:

“Oregon’s marine fisheries have been an integral thread of the economic and social fabric of coastal communities for many generations. Recent evolution of fishery science, policy, and practices in the U.S. has resolved or prevented several conservation concerns about the sustainability of commercial and recreational fisheries that plague some parts of the world, but other challenges remain.  Above all, changes in the climate and ocean conditions are expected to destabilize marine ecosystems, undermining our ability to predict how marine fish and shellfish – and the fishing industries – will respond to shifts in the environment and new regulatory actions.  The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife / Marine Resources Program faces an important question: What is needed to sustain healthy marine fisheries for future generations?  Federal and state policies call for conservation and wise use of fishery resources.  Sound science, in many disciplines, is the foundation of these efforts in Oregon. The panelists will provide an overview of federal and state management systems relevant to Oregon marine fisheries, agency research activities undertaken to support decision-making, and future research and data needs that provide opportunities for collaboration with other scientists and fishermen.  This seminar will introduce the topic, and several of Oregon’s commercial and recreational fisheries will be examined in detail as case studies in fishery management and science in future HMSC seminars.”
